(Northwest Arkansas) – USL Arkansas is excited to announce a new initiative to cultivate local soccer talent: the launch of a U20 Academy team. In collaboration with Sporting Arkansas, the team will play in a combination of USL Academy competitions as well as the United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) beginning play in the fall of 2024. "We're excited to begin our efforts to grow the soccer talent level in this region and unite the entire Northwest Arkansas soccer community,” said Chris Martinovic, co-founder of USL Arkansas and former youth club coach. “This academy team is just the first step towards helping develop a player pathway to pro as we look ahead to the launch of the senior teams in the coming years, and they will be the first to wear the Club’s official name, crest and colors.” Sporting Arkansas was searching for a solution to a persistent problem in the youth club soccer landscape in Northwest Arkansas – the need to elevate the level of play, competition and collegiate and professional exposure among older age groups. "As the region’s most talented players reach their mid-teens, they are frequently forced to leave Northwest Arkansas to find the high-level competition necessary to continue their development and pursue college or professional aspirations,” said Scott Marksberry, Director of Coaching for Sporting Arkansas. Increasingly, professional academies across the country, including in the USL, have adopted this model as a next step for their most mature teams. With this in mind, Sporting Arkansas approached the leadership of USL Arkansas to maximize the opportunity for the broader community. “We wanted to raise the level of competition, development and exposure for top talent across the region,” Marksberry said. “When we got to thinking about how we could make the biggest impact for the greatest number of players, launching this team under USL Arkansas became a clear choice. With the combined resources and expertise of both organizations, these players will have the best possible environment to thrive and compete at the highest levels.” Martinovic added: “We commend Scott and Sporting Arkansas for thinking beyond themselves and about the broader region in their approach and we look forward to forming other creative initiatives with local clubs and ensuring we invest equally in the development of our women players." The U20 Academy team will feature a coaching staff of experienced former collegiate and professional players and coaches. In addition to playing the UPSL schedule, the team will compete in friendlies with professional academies from Major League Soccer (MLS), USL and regional men's college programs. The team will also participate in the USL Academy Cup and other USL-sanctioned national events. The U20 Academy team is open to all boys youth players born on or after January 1, 2005, with evaluations scheduled the week of May 20th. The best players in the region will be offered positions on this team, regardless of where they currently compete. Further details regarding evaluations can be found on the USL Arkansas website. The team’s official name and crest continue to be developed and will be unveiled in the coming months. USL Arkansas invites the community to support this new team as they prepare to take the field during this inaugural season, promising a new chapter of competitive soccer in Arkansas. ### About Sporting Arkansas Soccer Club Founded in 1998 and based in Bentonville, Arkansas, Sporting Arkansas Soccer Club is the premier player development club in northwest Arkansas and an Official Academy Affiliate of Sporting Kansas City . New partnership will add a wealth of expertise at Sugar Creek Soccer Park, and also offers Fairway Service discounts to Sporting AR families. BENTONVILLE (AR) – Sporting Arkansas Soccer Club will enter a new partnership with Fairway Lawns to bring professional quality turf management to Sugar Creek Soccer Park and provide club members with discounted pricing on lawn management services starting Summer 2024. Fairway Lawns brings a wealth of experience in professional sports field management, including Arvest Ballpark in Springdale, home of the NW Arkansas Naturals. The company also manages a number of high school and college sports fields in the region. The comprehensive revitalization project at Sugar Creek Soccer Park aims to have match-ready pitches on all eight fields for the start of the fall 2024 season. In preparation for extensive turf improvements, the facility will be closed to all activity beginning May 25. Sporting Arkansas’ one-of-a-kind summer training program, Berraco, will move to a separate location for the 2024 session. Scott Marksberry, Sporting Arkansas Director of Coaching said: "Sugar Creek is an incredibly important asset to both our club and our local soccer community. We’ve hosted thousands of matches and tens of thousands of hours of practices, club programs and pickup games over the past few years. Two years ago, we decided that we could have either great fields or packed fields. We chose to pack our fields with activity for kids, and all of that wear-and-tear has caught up with us. With Fairway Lawns, we believe it will finally be possible for us to have both." As part of the partnership, Sporting Arkansas families will enjoy discounted pricing on Fairway Lawns services, bringing professional turf care to their homes. More information on the discount will be shared with club members in the coming days. Greg Vetrick, Regional Vice President for Fairway Lawns said: “At Fairway Lawns, we are thrilled to partner with Sugar Creek and Sporting Arkansas to not only improve the fields but also to provide the best playing experience for local soccer. We are excited to give additional meaning to the term ‘the beautiful game’ with lush green fields. We also look forward to offering helpful discounts to new customers in the community while serving them with our proven expert lawn care practices.” ### About Sporting Arkansas Soccer Club Founded in 1998 and based in Bentonville, Arkansas, Sporting Arkansas Soccer Club is the premier player development club in northwest Arkansas and an Official Academy Affiliate of Sporting Kansas City . Williams brings a wealth of soccer knowledge, professional experience, and positive energy to the club. BENTONVILLE (AR) – Sporting Arkansas Soccer Club, an official Academy Affiliate of Major League Soccer professional club Sporting Kansas City, is excited to welcome Ryan Williams as its new Associate Director of Coaching. Williams will leverage his notable experience as a professional player and college coach to lead club-wide programming, aiming to elevate the club’s operations and player development strategies. In 2020, Williams retired from professional soccer after a distinguished playing career that included 31 appearances with USL Championship side New Mexico United and three seasons with Charlotte Eagles of USL League 2, during which he served as the captain of the USL League 2 side. During his time in Charlotte, the Eagles won the USL National Championship, and Williams was named MVP of that National Championship match. Most recently, Williams served as men’s assistant coach for John Brown University, his alma mater. In that role, Williams was responsible for training session design and implementation, match day prep, player development, and on-field coaching responsibilities. Williams youth playing career saw him begin his development under legendary Hawaiian coach Aryen Hoxha at Hawaii Rush. At age 15, Williams made the decision to leave home in Hawaii to join the Colorado Rush Development Academy where he played in the USSF DA under several high-level coaches, including Sean Bushey (current director of Shattuck St Mary's MLS Next program), Erik Bushey (current Head Coach of Colorado Rapids 2 MLS Next Pro), and Tim Schulz (Founder of Rush Soccer, the world's largest youth soccer club). In his new role at Sporting Arkansas, Williams is tasked with spearheading the development and execution of club-wide programming. This includes overseeing Sporting Arkansas’ region-leading Individual Development Program (IDP), clubwide Functional Training sessions, Speed-Agility-Quickness (SAQ) training, Finishing School, and organizing the club’s free weekly pickup and small-sided games (SSG). He will also direct the club's Berraco off-season training programs, which includes both Summer and Winter sessions that serve more than 500 players from NWA and surrounding areas. Williams will also coach teams during the 2024-25 season- the specific teams are still to be determined. This spring, he will work closely with teams from the club's 2012 and 2013 boys age groups. Williams will also take on a role in club operations, managing field schedules for training and games at the club's home facility, Sugar Creek Soccer Park in Bentonville/Bella Vista. Williams will be pivotal in ensuring that Sporting Arkansas continues to provide comprehensive, high-quality soccer education and development opportunities to its athletes, and his appointment reflects Sporting Arkansas Soccer Club’s continued commitment to excellence and innovation in youth soccer training and development. Scott Marksberry, Director of Coaching for Sporting Arkansas said: “I’ve known Ryan since I went to recruit one of his teammates from Colorado Rush's Development Academy team back in 2013. Within the first 10 minutes of the game, Ryan's match intelligence, comfort on the ball, and competitive drive set him apart from every other player on the field, and he immediately became our top recruiting target for his grad class. Coach Ryan is passionate about the game, passionate about player development, and truly has a brilliant soccer mind. But most importantly, he has the character, competitiveness, and committment to servant leadership that we want as a model for our players. I can’t think of anyone better suited to lead our club's player development programming and help us push soccer in NWA to the next level.” ### About Sporting Arkansas Soccer Club Founded in 1998 and based in Bentonville, Arkansas, Sporting Arkansas Soccer Club is the premier player development club in northwest Arkansas and an Official Academy Affiliate of Sporting Kansas City .
